BABA CHAKA
Victoria’s Best Kept Secret
Formed in 2023, vocalist Ethan Echowood and guitarist Trevor McMorran met while attending the Victoria Conservatory of Music. Quick to branch out of the VCM’s halls and start cutting their teeth in the local scene, within a year Baba Chaka progressed from modest rooms to festival stages. Memorable performances include a spot on the main stage of Pender Island’s Mosaic Arts & Culture Festival in 2024, and playing to a sold-out (250+) Wise Hall in Vancouver in 2023.
Latest single “Deactivate” (2025), the first from Baba’s forthcoming debut album, is described as “a song for a dying automaton”. “Deactivate” immediately locks into its propulsive riff and rhythm, before tearing the sound open. Snarl to a roar.
Baba Chaka are indie through-and-through, self-produced by newest member and bassist Ellis Frank. Rounding out the lineup are Eli Swift on lead guitar, and Max Sharrett on the kit.
Baba for the witch. Chaka for the Khan.
Baba Chaka.
